A 1989 Porsche 911 C4 with an interesting pedigree was recently up for auction on eBay. The black beauty was formerly owned by Kirk Hammett, lead guitarist for heavy metal giant Metallica. Legend has it that in 1991, just prior to the release of the self titled album better known as the “black” album, a turning point of sorts for the band, Kirk and Tour Manager Tony Smith were on a flight talking about the upcoming album release. Kirk mentioned that he was concerned that it might be a little too different for people to accept. Tony said not to be concerned and that it would probably sell 10 million copies. Half jokingly, Kirk told Tony that if that happened, he would give him his beloved Porsche. This became the topic of several jokes between the two. A couple of years later, the album went 10x platinum, selling 10 million copies. By now the joke about the Porsche had become a distant memory. However, at the end of the tour, Kirk handed Tony an envelope and inside? The registration papers and keys to the 1989 Porsche 911.
Interestingly, the car did not sell on eBay. The high bid only reached $22,878, which did not meet the reserve. You can still check it out though. Click here.
