KCDA Drift Event II

Last thursday KCDA held it’s second Drifting event at Heartland Park’s skidpad. This time the course was set up a bit differently. A few more corners, a couple walls, and one seriously long straightaway added a whole new element to the equation. This course gave the drivers a bit more room to apply their own entry tactics. Lots of feint entries and even more dori action on the straights. Though the number of cars was slightly less than the last event due to other national drift events, there was still a good turn out. Now if we could just get some 944’s out there….

KCDA Meet (and a little Forza?)

Last saturday night we had a little get together out in Olathe. Basically a bunch of us from the Kansas City Drift Association thought it was time to get together, check out some cars, and give everybody a chance to meet each other. We had a pretty good turn out with plenty of cool drift cars. Lots of 240’s but there were a few RX-7’s, euro cars, and even an Evo. The original plan was to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings but that was quickly shot down due the amount of people we had. So we relocated across the parking lot at China Star and put about ten tables together to have us some dinner.

After dinner a few people went their separate ways, but the lot of us went back to watch some drifting videos, talk cars, and get down with some Forza drifting. Here’s a few of my choice drift cars from the game:

What’s this? A 951 drifting at Road America?

…and with proper decals

Who knew GT40’s were such good drift cars?

Downtown KC Airshow

The air show last weekend turned out to be pretty good. Though we didn’t get to see the AV-8 Harrier jets like last year, there were still plenty of great jets in the air. Unfortunately my camera’s battery died about half way through the show so I didn’t get the good stuff. Right after the F-15 went up (when my battery died) The F/A-18E Super Hornet went up for a tactical demo. Right after the gear left the ground he made a steep, full-burn climb, disappeared for a good five minutes, then showed up screaming out of the north-west, breaking the sound barrier right above the runway. I was stoked to say the least as I have never seen the sound barrier broken in person. That alone made it worth standing in the hot sun all day.

KC Air Show August 23-24

It’s that time of the year again. It’s time to put the tax payer’s money to work and waste gas in the most exhilarating way possible. This weekend the downtown KC airport will be  overtaken by F-15s, Hornets, Thunderbirds, and more. Afterburners will be at full blast and there will be plenty of high-G maneuvers. An array of static aircraft will be on display on the ground as well as a healthy list of performances in the air:

“Red Star” L-29

Jet powered glider “Silent Wing”

Heavily modified Pitt Special

“Extra-300S” aerobatics

“Angel 7” L-39 high speed demo

Jet powered School Bus (?)

F-15 Strike Eagle tactical demo

P-51 Mustang demo

British Strikemaster

F-16 Thunderbirds demo team

F/A-18 high speed tactical demo

F-4U Corsair demo

The line up is much better than last year. Of course we may be in store for a few unexpected guest like last year. We were waiting for the F-15 to take off last year when a pair of AV-8 Harriers came in fast and low, demonstrated some speedy maneuvers, and then finished by doing some hovering tricks. So you never know what’s in store

Porsche struggling in ALMS?

This season Porsche has had a few ups and downs. At the beginning of the season Porsche machines took 1st & 2nd place at Sebring, starting off the season very strong. However the following race in Saint Pertersburg, the quickest Porsche only made second, and a mere 4th place at Long Beach. The Porsche drivers seemed to be slipping further and further down in the results.

A turn around was in order, and the Porsche cars took the front of the pack with force. On May 18th Porsche machines again made it to the podium, snagging 1st and 2nd place in Utah. Unfortunately they couldn’t snag a win and settled into 2nd & 3rd for the Northeastern Grand Prix. Weeks later Porsche machine were only good for 3rd place at Mid-Ohio. At Road America last saturday the two Penske machines and the Dyson Racing machines were stacked up in 4th, 5th, and 6th positions at the end of the race. With a little bit of luck we’ll see at least one of the Porsche Teams bounce back for another win at Mosport Raceway on the 24th.

Back on Track

After searching far and wide my patience finally paid off. I found a 240SX that hadn’t been destroyed, neglected, drifted, or half-rusted away. It’s hard to find one of these cars in good condition. There is a huge market for modifying these cars, so finding one that hasn’t been completely riced out or zip-tied together from a few too many poorly executed slides is a task in itself. I managed to find one with a straight body, mint interior, and relatively low miles. On top of that the car has Stance inverted mono-tube coilovers, SPC adjustable rear upper control arms, toe arms, and upper links, plus a few JDM goodies here and there.

The car was located in St. Louis so last saturday morning I made my way down to Union station and took the 7:30 train to STL. After plenty of stops and countless delays my train finally arrived a few hours late.

As it sat when I bought it:

The ride back was quick and I only burned half a tank driving back to Kansas City. Here’s he factory Heads up display unit:

First thing was to get the car on a lift to roll the fenders, and properly set up the coilovers height, spring pre-load, and dampening. All of which were way out of wack.

The idea behind me getting into a 240SX is the fact that so many different engines swap into these cars. Which is a huge bonus on top of an already great chassis and seemingly limitless aftermarket. The most common swap for these cars is the SR20DET (stock engine in these cars overseas) but I’m not looking to stick with a four cylinder motor. Instead I’ve chosen the RB-series engines. The RB20DET, RB25DET, and RB26DETT are factory inline-six engines with single or twin turbos. These engines came stock in a number of vehicles in Japan, namely the Skyline GTS-T and GTR models. Each capable of making enormous amounts of power. These engines are a common, relatively straight forward swap in S13 and S14 240SX’s. My personal choice is the RB25DET. A strong 2.5L straight-six with variable valve timing and a single T28 turbo. This RB, in my opinion is the best choice being as it is a balance between technology, displacement and affordability compared to the other RB engines, Here’s a comparison of the stock KA24 engine (US 240SX) and an RB25DET:

Here’s a great example of what the aftermarket has to offer for RB engines There are endless possibiblities for fabricating intake manifolds, piping, and custom turbo setups. Notice how the RB20DET fits in the 240SX engine bay. It’s a tight fit.

In due time I’ll get my hands on an RB25 and the transformation will begin. The goal is to have the car done by the end of winter but that’s being optimistic.

GTR Limitations

The R35 GTR may parallel the 997 twin’s performance, but it is not without flaws. Tunability of such a complex and technologically advanced vehicle, is sure to be in question for the first owners of this new breed of Skylines. Sources in japan say that the GTR can be set to a track mode to remove the top speed limiter when at the racetrack. However should you skip the mandatory post race $1k service at a Nissan Performance Center the factory warranty is void.  As if that wasn’t enough simple modifications like a different set of wheels will throw a code due to a wheel speed sensor in each of the facotry rims.

Heartland Park Drift Event

The first ever Drift Event at Heartland Park put on by KCDA was a complete success. Held on the massive skid pad the course was divided up into separate sections for both beginner and advanced drivers. A wide selection of cars made it out to the event, some from as far as Omaha and St. Louis.

What drives you…

If there is anything that I simply cannot do without it’s a spirited drive through winding roads. I take full advantage of any opportunity to do so, and have ever since I can remember.

Over the years I’ve compiled a vast selection of photos from all over the world showing just how great everybody else has it when it comes to the twisties. True there are quite a few choice roads within the greater Kansas City area that provide more than enough fun to keep me satisfied. But having seen how much more other landscapes have to offer it leaves something to be desired.
